PN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (EXE LEV) - GOVERNMENT RELATIONS OFFICEDEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION The Houston Public Works Department provides many of the basic services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives and works in Houston and the surrounding region. Primarily, the department is responsible for all the things we take for granted on a daily basis: the administration, planning, maintenance, construction management and technical engineering of the City's infrastructure. This includes the production and distribution of over 146 billion gallons of water per year and the treatment of over 90 billion gallons per year of wastewater. It also includes the maintenance of the City's over 16,000 lane miles of streets, over 60,000 stormwater manholes, over 100,000 stormwater inlets, over 1,100,000 street name and traffic control signs, over 17,000 freeway and under bridge light fixtures, over 50,000 fire hydrants and traffic signals at over 2,450 intersections. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:The Assistant Director will manage the direction, goal setting and day-to-day operations of the Houston Public Works Governmental Relations Office. The Governmental Relations Office will act as the liaison between Houston Public Works, City Council, the Mayor's Governmental Relations Office, the State of Texas legislature and the federal government legislature. It will function to facilitate the flow of information both to and from these entities.Specific examples include, but are not limited to, placing Houston Public Works' items on the City Council Agenda, responding to requests for information and service from City Council offices and other City Departments, assisting with City Council committee meetings and other interactions with City Council offices, liaising with the Mayor's Office of Intergovernmental Relations regarding state and federal legislative and regulatory matters, acting as the Houston Public Works point of contact for State and federal legislative offices, attending State and federal legislature committee and special charge meetings, reviewing proposed state and federal legislation and providing feedback regarding compatibility with Houston Public Works needs and goals.Reporting to the Houston Public Works Director, the Assistant Director will manage a staff of 6 full-time employees.
