Overview

Aegis Aerospace is currently looking for a Biomedical Engineer to join our team in Houston, TX.

Overview:

This position will provide biomedical engineering and scientific support to the Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory (CVL) at NASA Johnson Space Center. Teammates within the CVL develop, implement, and execute various human biomedical research studies across spaceflight, spaceflight-analogs, and ground-based platforms. The research studies are designed to characterize the effects of spaceflight on cardiovascular, ocular, and other physiologic systems, and to develop countermeasures against deconditioning due to spaceflight. The primary function of the incumbent will be to provide biomedical engineering support in all aspects of the research projects, including development and use of MATLAB or Python programs that process biomedical data from various sources. There will be opportunities to participate in all facets of work within the CVL, including collecting, analyzing, managing, and providing inputs to reporting research and medical data in support of research activities conducted in the CVL.We are particularly interested in individuals whose expertise will complement the existing CVL research portfolio, and planned research experiments to enable NASA to safely send humans on exploration-class missions.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
• Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures.
• Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company.
• Responsible for completing all assigned training.
• Perform work that involves conventional engineering practices.
• Application of engineering principles and practice of related specialties.
• Collect, reduce, collate, analyze, and archive flight, flight analog, and ground study data.
• Analyze experimental data and recommend modifications to analysis procedures and analytical methods; develop and modify software for data reduction and analysis.
• Operate specialized equipment used in tests on human subjects.
• Operate data acquisition systems during hardware verification, science verification, and testing on human subjects.
• Prepare and update appropriate documentation of software and hardware development activities.
• Perform software and hardware evaluations ; contact vendors for information, and initiate procurement.
• Assist in the preparation of human research protocols, technical reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
• Participate in test readiness reviews and meetings related to the development and implementation of human research protocols, detailed test plans, etc.
• Contribute to the formulation and documentation of standard procedures in the laboratory.
• Undertake travel as required to support ground-based, bed rest, and flight experiments. Qualifications
  
  REQUIRED:
  • This position requires a Bachelor's plus 6 years of experience; or Master's plus 4 years of experience; or a PhD degree plus 0-2 years of experience in Biomedical, Mechanical, or Electrical, or Computer Science Engineering.
  • The incumbent must be able to independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria and use judgment to make decisions to provide engineering solutions to problems.
  • Knowledge of human physiology is also a requirement to enable understanding of biomedical experiments designed to characterize the human adaptive response to spaceflight and spaceflight analogs.
  • Previous experience working with human test subjects is also required.
  • Incumbent must have the ability to work effectively both in small teams and independently; and work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting and where there are frequently divergent or competing goals for the project implementation and outcome.
  • Advanced PC Skills in Microsoft Office products and Matlab are required.
  • The incumbent is expected to participate as a member of a research team working closely with principal investigators, astronauts, subjects, support scientists, and other engineers. Communication skills must be excellent. The incumbent must develop a thorough knowledge of NASA's and KBR's policies and procedures governing the use of human test subjects. DESIRED:
    • Technical skills associated with image analysis, including ultrasound (cardiac and vascular), MRI (eye and brain), and/or ocular coherence tomography (eye), is a plus.
    • Experience acquiring and analyzing ocular coherence tomography images of the human eye and the evaluation and integration of biomechanical instrumentation intended for use with human subjects is desired.
    • Experience with Python programming.
