Position Summary

We are looking for a dynamic, self-starting and driven business development professional to join this exciting and high caliber, globally-focused team, which services the some of the best-known and most exciting clients in ENR across the world.

Support the Energy & Resources group, with a primary focus across its US practice, to drive its business development and marketing efforts.

This will involve identifying, formulating and implementing ENR business development and marketing strategies that complement similar initiatives across regions where the firm has a presence. This is a hands-on role and involves taking ownership of the development of key credentials and leading on client pitch opportunities. Communication is important in this role as the Business Development Manager will lead engagement and implementation efforts for strategic BD priorities and find effective ways to raise the profile of ENR internally and externally (with the support of the Communications team).

Our ENR group consists of more than 130 attorneys (with many other lawyers involved in the sector assigned to other practice groups). It is multidisciplinary, combining regulatory, transactional, financial and litigation disciplines with a focus on clients operating in energy & natural resources, and related industries. ENR lawyers are located in Reed Smith's offices across the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, providing an exceptional global platform for businesses engaged in the extraction, production, distribution, and trading of ENR products and services or the financing of energy and natural resources projects, anywhere in the world.

The successful candidate will work largely autonomously in terms of the day-to-day business of ENR marketing and business development, but also collaboratively with the business development professionals supporting the ENR Group globally (or in other industry groups and regions), to ensure that all ENR marketing is coordinated across the firm's global platform. The position sits within a growing, creative and energetic firm-wide marketing team of professionals.

This is a high profile role and we are looking for someone who has the gravitas and subject matter expertise focused on ENR to drive growth, influence and motivate partners across ENR, and to assist successfully in building client relationships and brand profile. A proactive and enthusiastic approach with the ability to work with little supervision but lots of communication is also key. The successful candidate should be a confident and effective communicator, with the confidence to offer ideas at practice meetings and draft clear and accurate copy.

Essential Functions

The successful candidate will be the key contact point for ENR attorneys across the US. They will work closely with the industry leaders, partners, counsel and associates to drive and execute the marketing and business development priorities for the group. Key responsibilities are summarized below.

Understanding the industry and our business

Have a keen interest in, and develop a strong understanding of, the ENR industry across all sectors (from oil and gas to renewables; and from extraction/production to trading)
Identify new trends and developments which represent potential opportunities for the firm
Maintain a detailed appreciation of what Reed Smith has to offer across different practice areas - within the industry group and more broadly - for the purpose of pursuing cross-selling opportunities into clients and prospects
Undertake industry and client research, using the firm's library, knowledge management and accounting resources, as well as external sources where needed

Strategic planning and execution

Work closely with the industry leaders to maintain the industry group's business plan, taking a leading role day-to-day to ensure that priorities are executed efficiently and on a timely basis
Consult and collaborate continuously with attorney members of the team to ensure that the business development needs of the group are fully met, in line with strategic priorities
Work with partners to identify new opportunities for growing the business and help package new service propositions that can be marketed to clients and prospects
Support and encourage partners in the group to draw up and execute on their personal practice development plans, advising them on social media and the latest best practices.
Regularly review progress with the industry leaders and make recommendations for any improvements or changes
On a regular basis, track and disseminate key activities to the group, including proposals, new wins, key industry developments and opportunities

Client relationship management, targeting and new business

Draft forward-looking clients plans for the key targets in our client program and implement activities arising from these plans; regularly monitor progress against these plans and ensure that follow-up actions are undertaken to build the client relationship and generate profitable revenue growth
Ensure that appropriate coverage and support is provided to the key clients of the group, including proactively supporting a select number of clients in a CRM capacity
Advise lead partners and Client Relationship Leads on new pitch and proposal opportunities for clients, ensuring that a first-class working document is always delivered to lawyers (working closely with the central pitch team where appropriate)
Ensure that rigor and strategic thinking is applied when considering new pitching opportunities, working with the relevant partners on decision making and ensuring adherence to firmwide procedures
Work closely with the Client Value Team to create clear pricing strategies for clients
Liaise with the Finance Department and Client Intelligence Teams to produce financial reports on clients

Profile raising and market reputation

Work with our PR team (and agencies where appropriate) to develop and implement a PR/media plan to raise the external profile of lawyers and the industry group as whole. Experience with a range of social media is a must.
Manage social media campaigns and sites/pages etc on behalf of the Group to improve market visibility, ensuring these stay ahead of the curve in terms of content, platform used and presentation
Work with the partner group to identify industry issues and drive issue-led campaigns to raise awareness of our capabilities and bring in new business leads
Identify thought leadership opportunities, including speaking engagements, industry conferences, and writing and blog postings-both for Reed Smith publications and externally with professional and trade organizations
Project manage large scale events, such as our flagship commodities event in Houston, seminars, roundtables and receptions
Assist in coordinating and strategic planning related to industry conferences (national and international), client seminars, and targeted sponsorships, including budgeting and tracking associated costs
Monitor and report on return on investment to assess the value of ongoing involvement in profile raising activities
Coordinate legal directory submissions with external submission consultants and partners
Generate ideas for improving the profile and reputation of the group

Collateral and supporting materials

Ensure that we have appropriate industry group marketing materials (industry group profiles, deal lists, capability statements, case studies), maintained and kept up-to-date
Maintain best practice wording for input into pitches and proposals - using the firm's PitchPerfect system
Create materials for client presentations, internal training meetings etc.
Oversee the effective, timely and fulsome gathering of matters into the firm'smatter experience database (Matter Central)
Ensure that the industry group is making full use of the firm's CRM system to track and report on business development activities

Other

Assist industry group leaders with the integration of lateral hires
Work with other business development team colleagues around the world to promote cross selling initiatives with other practice groups
Work closely with EMEA marketing counterparts to develop an international approach to business development
Some travel will be required between offices in the US

Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree in business, marketing or related field required. JD and/or MBA preferred.

Experience:

The candidate will need to have good legal industry and substantive BD knowledge including experience in a law firm environment, and have good commercial understanding of the business world and legal trends that impact firm clients.
Although ENR experience is highly-desirable, candidates that can demonstrate a real passion, interest and enthusiasm for the sector are encouraged to apply
Educated to degree level or equivalent
A minimum of 4 years' experience in a marketing or business development position involving extensive interaction with partners, with at least some experience in a professional services environment
Experience of client-facing activity preferable
Experience of working across borders is preferable.

The role will require strong organizational skills, time management, initiative, focus on service delivery and excellent attention to detail and the ability to perform under pressure.
The candidate must be able to communicate well, recognizing our global approach, with excellent oral and written skills. They will be a natural internal networker who uncovers opportunities through engaging informally with partners and colleagues, as well as externally with clients.
They will need to be able to influence leadership and partners, so they can quickly become a trusted advisor - acting as internal consultant to partners on marketing and BD, inputting ideas and providing advice
Flexibility and adaptability; ability to multi-task, stay organized and manage competing priorities
Able to demonstrate initiative where possible
Sensitivity to cultural differences and issues and the ability to deal with a variety of personalities
Good team player
Strong computer skills including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and other regularly used business software, familiarity with CRM, content management and other marketing systems, are also essential.
