Job Summary
The Director, Philanthropy plays an integral role by participating in all fundraising activities including donor relations, grant proposals, direct mail appeals, and special events, and by providing research and administrative support to the Development Office. The Director, Philanthropy coordinates and participates in strategic development planning and activities, interfacing with senior management, and maximizes both annual unrestricted income and targeted support for strategic organizational and project development priorities. This position oversees the Grants Coordinator/Development Associate and works closely with the Manager, Marketing & Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fund Development
Overseeing research on prospective corporations, foundations, individuals, religious institutions, and government entities.
Oversee the preparation and management of grant requests to private donors, assisting with writing and coordination as assigned by the VP.
Some government grants may be included.
Oversee the funding schedule and deadlines calendar, ensuring deadlines are being met.
Maintain a portfolio of individual donors (most typically those who give annual gifts of $5,000 or less) and foundation/corporate donors (avg. grant of $50,000 or less) and develop/implement strategies for cultivation and stewardship.
Oversee the processing of donations, reconciling with the Finance Department, and preparation of acknowledgement letters and other correspondence.
Ensure foundation, corporate, and individual donor files are being maintained (physical files and electronic database).
Oversee the performance of the annual audit of development files.
Create monthly fundraising reports and other database reports as needed.
With support from the Grants Coordinator/Development Associate, work to provide excellent and timely customer service to external customers who request information including recent and past donations and other donor records.
Participate in the development of best practices (i.e. creation of Policies & Procedures) and documentation and training of staff in maintaining accurate database records and more

Communications
Support the VP and Manager, Marketing & Communications to implement the strategies/tactics identified in the organization's Strategic Communications Plan
Assist in the production and mailing of stewardship reports, sponsorship packages, donor appeal letters, and other related communications pieces that support Fund Development.
Oversee preparation of donor packets for property tours.

Events/Outreach
Assist the VP in preparing for quarterly Fund Development/Communications Committee meetings and any necessary follow up.
Support in the production of special events (i.e. groundbreakings, grand openings, special tours, and donor receptions).
Host tours and informational meetings for donors, prospective donors, and community partners.
Coordinate and/or assist with outreach efforts as determined by the CEO or VP.
Represent the organization by attending community events and also committing to work at major NHH events as assigned, which may include weekends and evenings.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Nonprofit development experience.
Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills, coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills.
Flexibility, i.e. the ability to adjust to differences among funding organizations to attain results.
A strong professional presence that demonstrates skill and authenticity, thereby instilling confidence and trust in corporate, foundation, governmental, and other nonprofit representatives.
The ability to grow into a leader, as well as be an effective team player.
A positive, confident, and results-oriented professional with a service-oriented spirit.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as proficiency in fundraising database/management software, such as Raiser's Edge, eTapestry, or GiftMaker Pro.
Ability to organize and prioritize work and adjust to shifting priorities.
Ability to work independently with little supervision if circumstances were to call for such.

Equipment

Duties will require the regular use of telephones, computers, fax machines and calculators. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.

Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to lift moderately heavy objects up to 10lbs. and perform duties requiring extensive maneuverability and normal strength.
