Job Description:
MEDVAMC provides a comprehensive range of techniques for cancer
prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The facility has a high
expertise in colorectal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, ENT, urologic,
and thoracic surgery. The number of new cancer patients seen every
year at MEDVAMC continues to increase with over a thousand newly
diagnosed cancer patients last year. The Physician must be Board
Certified in Hematology and Oncology. Some of the duties are listed
below.
Ability to perform initial histories and physical examinations on
outpatients with hematology problems; make assessments and use
appropriate diagnostic evaluations; and implement timely and
appropriate treatment.
Rounding with residents and fellows on the inpatient service for up
to 2 months.
Physicians must be competent to perform the following
procedures:
- Running the V-TEL (virtual) clinics between the Michael E.
DeBakey VA Medical Center and the various Community Based
Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).
- Be familiar with the expected side effects of treatments for
cancer and hematologic conditions
- Assist with the diagnosis and interpretation of pulmonary
nodules
- Counsel and advise patients who are newly diagnosed with
malignancy
- Educate project personnel on interactions with newly diagnosed
cancer patients
- Facilitate and coordinate management of all rural patients being
treated and managed for cancer treatment through the telemedicine
system
Orders diagnostic studies and interprets laboratory tests, EKG, and
radiology diagnostic tests (CXR, CT Scan, MRl).
Provides ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients. He/she
screens outpatients to determine need for further care.
Carries out health promotion, disease prevention, cancer screening,
and chronic disease prevention activities.
Initiates and expedites requests for consultations and scheduling
special tests and studies.
Responsible for typing the appropriate documentation of initial
visit, follow-up visits, procedures performed, problem lists,
procedure lists, and making interim summaries in Computerized
Patient Record System (CPRS). He/she must be computer literate.
Provides education and counseling of patients and families in
preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed
treatments and drugs.
Overseeing PAs/NPs.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary

restriction on moonlighting
