The Neurology Care Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) affiliated with the Department of Neurology, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is recruiting a full-time academic and teaching-oriented Staff Physician. The MEDVAMC is a major BCM affiliated hospital with a large and active Neurology clinical, research and training program. The individual will join the largest Neurology and one of six (6) VHA Parkinson's Disease Research Education Clinical Center. The position involves both movement disorders and general Neurology outpatient and inpatient care. Board certification in Neurology and fellowship training in Movement Disorders is required. Expertise in neurotoxin injection therapy, movement disorders surgical assessment, planning and chronic post-surgical management including deep brain stimulation programming is highly desirable. The Neurology Care Line is responsible for a 14-bed neurology inpatient and 4 bed step down unit, and provides consultations in the intensive care units and the Emergency Department. Resident, fellow & medical student education is required and the individual must be eligible for an academic appointment with our affiliate, BCM. Weekend and nighttime attending coverage on a rotating basis is shared between our 15 other neurologists. Preferred individuals will have evidence of a strong interest in teaching and clinical or basic research or scholarly activity, and who are board certified/qualified in Neurology. Academic rank, tenure, and salary are based on qualifications and experience. Candidates must be a US citizen, permanent resident or eligible for VHA employment.   • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.Moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs); Light carrying (15 lbs and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands required; walking (up to 4 hours); standing (up to 4 hours); repeated bending (1-2 hours); ability for rapid, mental, and muscular coordination simultaneously.
