helping immigrants secure their future in the United States through
asylum?--
--- Are you an organized, detail-oriented, self-starter who is
passionate about advocating for people facing crisis?
--- Have outstanding legal research and writing skills?--
--- Keen to find a job where your talents and efforts will be
rewarded through excellent compensation and career development
opportunities?
--- Have one to four years of experience with both affirmative and
defensive asylum cases?--
--- Open to traveling for up to two nights at a time, sometimes
multiple times per month, for work?--
--- Speak Spanish fluently?--
If that's you, read on. Please read this entire announcement
carefully.--
Political Asylum Lawyers, a Houston-based law firm, is hiring an
Immigration Lawyer. Let's figure out whether that could be
you.--
Is our law firm the right fit for you?--
Only apply if, after due consideration, you think you can add real
value to our outstanding team and can fully commit to supporting
our mission of helping immigrants secure their future in the United
States through asylum.
You must live in the Houston area, as you'll frequently go to the
city's immigration courts, the asylum office and immigration
detention centers.
You'll be working from home, so you will need a quiet space, fast
internet, and the discipline to stay on task without close
supervision.--
Travel is required for this position: you can expect two-night
trips at least one per month, sometimes more, to any number of
cities in the United States to represent our clients in immigration
court or before USCIS.--
You must be flexible - the nature of tasking may change daily or
over time, with you stepping up to do whatever is needed to give
the clients the best experience and representation possible.
Policies and procedures will change frequently, as we're a
fast-growing company, and we're constantly experimenting to
optimize our delivery of services.--
You've got to be detail-oriented and able to work under pressure,
meeting deadlines and producing top-notch work. You also need to
take initiative, acting boldly to further our clients' and firm's
interests without being asked to do so.--
To be clear, the work is at times intense: we're doing important -
in some cases, life-or-death - work for our clients, sometimes on
compressed timelines, and we're serious about promoting a culture
of excellence in all that we do.--
You will likely work more than 40 hours per week, but not much more
than that - there are no billable hours, and we don't push our
attorneys into the 50- or 60-hour weeks that are common at other
law firms.--
If you like what you've read so far, and you're passionate about
supporting people who truly need the best help possible as they
face crisis, then you'll find working at Political Asylum Lawyers
to be immensely rewarding.--
Our work changes lives. Our team takes immense pride in the role we
play, through our advocacy and client engagement, in helping
immigrants get safety, stability, and freedom. Also, working here
means a chance to cultivate skills that will serve you for the rest
of your career, as we prioritize training and professional
development.--
What you will do
You'll handle all aspects of the representation for clients in
affirmative and defensive asylum cases, including detained
cases.--
This includes compiling asylum applications; assessing evidence;
conducting research into country conditions information; writing
legal briefs; preparing clients through practice interview/hearing
sessions; and representing asylum seekers before EOIR and USCIS,
both in person and via video conference.--
You will work closely with other attorneys, paralegals, and other
support staff from the beginning to the end of our cases.--
You may be asked to supervise paralegals and/or attorneys.
You will perform various other tasks as needed; we're looking for
team players who are happy to do whatever's necessary to support
our teammates and our clients.--
You'll have regular contact with clients, engaging them routinely
in both English and Spanish and ensuring they have an excellent
experience with the firm. Outstanding interpersonal and
communication skills are of the utmost importance for this
position.--
What you will get
Salary commensurate with experience, but above market norms. Pay
may increase quickly if you're a great fit for the firm and do an
outstanding job.--
We offer a best-in-class benefits package, including 100% of
premiums covered for a top-notch health insurance plan. We also
offer dental and vision insurance, and 401(k) matching.--
You will receive four weeks of vacation annually. Additionally, all
employees are off work on all U.S. federal holidays (11) and the
week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
Opportunities for professional development abound - we love
providing time and resources for our employees to acquire and
develop skills. Find a workshop, conference, or other activity that
will make you a better asylum lawyer, and we'll be happy to send
you.--
How to apply--
To apply, follow the prompts in the software program where you're
viewing this announcement.--
You must upload a cover letter and resume in PDF format. Your
application won't be considered without a cover letter. Your cover
letter should explain why you're uniquely qualified for this
particular position and why you would be a great fit for our law
firm. Generic, copy/paste cover letters will be discarded.--
Please do not call or email us about this opening. But if you want
to ensure your application materials have been received or want to
