Job Description:

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Provides supervision, special training to technical personnel and/or highly technical work in medical and related research projects. Impacts laboratory research techniques, production and procedures.

A leading cancer research program seeks highly motivated and intelligent individual to fully participate in cutting-edge-science spanning the disciplines of molecular biology, genomic science, functional genomics and cell biology. This positon represents and outstanding career development opportunity for both long-term research associates as well as recently graduate or medical school training. The laboratory utilized state-of-arts technologies and highly innovative approaches to dissect the molecular, cellular and organismal basis of cancer initiation, and progression, and maintenance. Individuals will be involved as a member of a multidisciplinary team charged with mission of functionalizing the cancer genome. These activities are expected to facilitate the rapid translation of genomics data into drug discovery endpoints. Individuals will be trained on multiple molecular biology techniques, will have opportunities to operate the most advanced biomedical equipment, and will participate in research publications.

Key Functions

Provide technical assistance in carrying out various research projects. Impacts laboratory research activities of high volume mice colonies.

  • Performs daily animal care of nude mice and health flagging. Routine husbandry such as weaning, toe and tail docking etc. Ensures the ventilated cage rack system and automated drinking water system are operating correctly and reports alarms or malfunctions to supervisor immediately.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as routine weaning and identification. Additional procedures may include IP and SQ injections cells and drugs.
  • Ensures cleanliness and sanitation of animal housing and ancillary areas.
  • Records data in the appropriate hardcopy of electronic system. Ensure that data is entered in a timely manner. Ensures that the correct animal identification is placed on animals. Reports any discrepancies to the supervisor.
  • Maintains environment cleanliness. Ensures supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.


Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, one year of required experience

Preferred: Animal experience gained in a university research setting. Mice handling and experience necessary.

  • Must be highly motivated, reliable, responsible, well organized and a careful record keeper with good attention to details.
  • Excellent communication skills are required as well as the ability to work well in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment.
