Patterson-UTI DrillingThe New Standard for Drilling PerformanceDrill safer, smarter and faster with Patterson-UTI Drilling's comprehensive fleet of pad-capable rigs featuring advanced walking systems to enhance your operations so you can reach your apex.The Control Systems Engineer is responsible for developing and conducting manual and simulated testing to qualify drilling rig control applications prior to deploying software and hardware changes to the field. The position will support all automation activities and will be a key contributor as the Company pursues its technology development roadmap. The successful candidate will be passionate about providing the highest level of quality in testing, documentation development, and laboratory management as well as remain current in new and emerging technologies related to drilling controls applications and computer simulated testing.This role will report to the Manager of Controls and AutomationDetailed Description:* Work with the controls and automation development team to review functional design specifications of drilling controls applications, ensuring full understanding of the products* Analyze performance requirements and develop test plans for the applications, both manual and with simulation, to ensure operational functionality and overall system quality* Coordinate with product development and management teams in product development lifecycle to conform end user product to quality requirements and delivery schedule* Select and obtain appropriate data to ensure accurate representation of field conditions* Document and conduct manual and automated testing to find defects and assure that the products meets design specifications and requirements. This includes isolating, reproducing, verifying and reporting defects, as well as presenting results and analysis to project teams* Effectively document and communicate all defects discovered during the testing and verification process* Track software defects and report testing status to stakeholders* Identify opportunities and areas for improvement; recommend solutions* Assist in the commissioning and testing of applications on drilling rig control systems in the field as part of the Company's beta test program* Act as the control lab manager, procuring and maintaining software and hardware, keeping accurate and up-to-date drawings and diagrams, and scheduling tests and demonstrations* Provide subject matter expert input, author, and review/approve a variety of technical documentation including test procedures, operating procedures, commissioning documentation, user manuals, troubleshooting guides, technical presentations, and training materials* Respond to technical issues, resolve and follow up with end user* Remain current in technology being developed in the field of automation testing with the use of computer simulators; research and recommend investment in new technologiesJob Requirements:* Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously to meet challenging deadlines* Demonstrate clear written and verbal communication skills and ability to promptly give, and follow directions when working with others* Ability to develop business processes when necessary for improved organization or efficiency* Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills* Ability to read various schematics (electrical, mechanical, block diagrams)* Ability to safely navigate the yard, shop, and drilling rig work sites with walking, climbing, standing, stepping, etc. during normal operating conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather)* Ability to proficiently use MS Office Suite to develop presentations, correspondence, reports, and schedules (Word, Excel, Power Point, Project, Visio etc.).* Physical ability to:* Lift and carry 50 pounds independently while walking on uneven surfaces* Bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and crawl occasionally during visits to field and operational work areas* Listen for unusual noises that signify equipment and or machinery problems* Stay alert and focused including during occasional extended work periods* Maintain spatial orientation and awareness to safely move around work environment with many moving objects including overhead machinery* Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all designated times

* Ability to regularly travel as needed to visit work sites and support business units; may require extended travel to remote locations and/or overnight stay(s) outside normal office area* Ability to work on weekends and be on call after hours as neededMinimum Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline* 3+ Year experience in a quality assurance role* 3+ Year experience in the development or testing of controls & automation applicationsPreferred Qualifications* Experience working in a multi-developer environment* Experience designing and testing drilling rig control system applications* Experience in the design and development of computer simulation programs to assist with automation testing* Experience with LabVIEW, CX-1 programming* Experience in HMI development using Wonderware / WinCC* Experience in Omron PLC programming using CX-One software* Experience designing and testing SCADA
