In this position as Chief of Staff the candidate would be responsible for overseeing and participating in day to day clinical care of patients. Employees are involved in direct patient care (in a clinic, in-home care, etc.) This function is responsible for the management of clinical staff in any number of clinics. Responsibilities may include overseeing the management of the Nursing and Provider populations. Provides leadership to and is accountable for the performance and results through multiple layers of management and senior level professional staff.- Impact of work is most often at the regional (e.g. multi-state) level, or is responsible for a major portion of a business segment, functional area or line of business.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develops, translates and executes strategies or functional/operational objectives for a region, line of business, or major portion of a business segment functional area.
  • Directs others to resolve highly complex or unusual business problems that affect major functions or disciplines.
  • Drives programs that impact markets of customers and consumers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of relevant healthcare plans (e.g., BlueCross/BlueShield; UHC Medicare & Retirement
  • Demonstrate understanding of managed-care entities (e.g., ACO; CCO; HMO)-Demonstrate understanding of relevant clinical practice regulations (e.g., State Board Nursing; Medical/Clinical Practice; Board of Pharmacy; Medical Board of Examiners; CMS)
  • Demonstrate understanding of state, federal, and private healthcare guidelines, regulations, procedures, and products (e.g., Medicare/Medicaid; HIPAA; MIPAA)
  • Demonstrate understanding of clinical-related business environment, trends, and issues (e.g., external healthcare systems; market drivers/issues; competitive issues)
  • Solid understanding of local and/or national labor market issues and resource availability
  • Previous proven knowledge of Internal Business Operations
  • Understanding of internal processes, workflows, policies, and procedures
  • nderstanding of relevant financial/purchasing procedures and terminology
  • Demonstrate understanding of tools and systems specific to the business segment (e.g., human capital systems/processes)
  • Demonstrate understanding of relevant software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office applications; SharePoint; Electronic Medical Records)
  • Draft, review, approve, and/or implement business continuity plans specific to clinical operations, when necessary, Build/Maintain Relationships and Collaborate with Internal and External Customers
  • Develop/implement processes and programs to shape working relationships with internal and/or external customers-Work with internal and/or external customers (e.g., business partners; clinical staff; physicians; facilities owners/operators; health plans) to understand and/or resolve issues (e.g., claims resolutions; care delivery issues; enrollment)
  • Gather feedback from internal and/or external customers (e.g., business partners; clinical staff; physicians; facilities owners/operators; health plans) regarding clinical operational performance and effectiveness
  • Provide feedback to internal and/or external customers (e.g., business partners; clinical staff; physicians; facilities owners/operators; health plans) regarding their performance and metrics (e.g., financial performance; quality metrics)-Work with internal and/or external customers (e.g., national/regional/local focus groups) to identify, define, and/or implement opportunities to improve clinical programs and performance
  • Meet with internal and/or external business partners regularly (e.g., JOCs; CRMs) to keep them up-to-date on clinical performance and issues to guide decision-making-Remain aware of issues and operations of internal and/or external business partners (e.g., health plans; facilities owners/operators)
  • Interact/communicate with the external patient community to provide information (e.g., health fairs; lunch and learn sessions)
  • Interact/communicate with potential/existing customers (e.g., accompany sales personnel on business development meetings) to educate and inform them of company value and services
  • Plan/implement corrective actions/solutions to address operational issues and concerns
  • Analyze relevant information (e.g., press daily surveys; trends; market needs) to identify potential new programs and services
  • Examine relevant information (e.g., CMS cost reports) to determine whether to expand services into new markets-Create/provide input into proposals for developing new programs/services or expanding existing programs/services
  • Work with internal partners to determine needed resources and steps (e.g., identify partners; determine ROI; identify staffing needs; create program content) for developing new program/services or expanding existing programs/services
  • Set/review/modify/provide input into strategic objectives for applicable clinical operations CLM_Ensure Compliance with Relevant Regulations, Procedures, and Processes
  • Ensure compliance with relevant safety guidelines/procedures and business continuity plans-Ensure internal staff/colleagues attend/receive required training (e.g., fit testing; TB screening; ULearns)
  • Complete/maintain necessary records and files to monitor and/or report compliance-related issues
  • Maintain and/or ensure others maintain required licenses, certifications, and credentialing to perform job required activities
  • Work with internal partners (e.g., risk management; legal counsel; compliance) to resolve compliance-related issues and/or review compliance for new programs/services

    Required Qualifications:
    • BSN degree
    • Valid RN license in the state of VA or compact licensure
    • 10+ years of clinical background experience
    • 7+ years of leadership experience
    • 5+ years of various operational performance metrics experience(e.g., medical expense; return on investment; profit and loss; cost targets)
    • Experience translating financial information/indicators into terms understandable to healthcare personnel (e.g., physicians; mid-levels; nurses) in order to facilitate cost controls
    • Proven ability to present to external stakeholders (e.g., conferences; industry professionals) on industry-related issues in order to provide visibility for and understanding of company products and services CLM_Plan/Implement/Monitor Clinical Operations, Programs, and Strategies
    • Proven ability to monitor clinical performance metrics (e.g., MEM; quality metrics) to ensure internal and/or external customer and contract obligations are being met
    • VA resident
