    Job Summary
    At Houston Methodist, the System CDI Educator is responsible for participating in patient care by serving as a role model, a clinical consultant, and an educator of staff. The System CDI Educator maintains competence in adult learning theory, presentation skills, competency validation, age specific competence related to patient population of assigned area(s), unit-specific, high risk/low frequency skills, and mandatory waived testing skills for areas of responsibility.

    PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    PEOPLE - 20%
    1. Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic, team-focused work unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimal department results. (EF)
    2. Collaborates with key business partners of Clinical Documentation Improvement as needed for problem resolution and/or achievement of identified patient specific goals. (EF)
    3. Assesses educational and professional needs for Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDS), Coders, Physicians, and other stakeholders on an ongoing basis utilizing metrics, dashboards, interdisciplinary rounds, scorecards, accreditation recommendations, and staff surveys. (EF)

    SERVICE - 25%
    1. Functions directly and indirectly as a clinical resource/consultant by working with staff, management, and/or other groups as applicable. Makes recommendations based on the employees' growth and developmental needs. (EF)
    2. Provides education services to others, as assigned. (EF)

    QUALITY/SAFETY - 25%
    1. Collaborates with key stake holders and others to design, implement, and evaluate education programs to meet the identified needs of the staff and others using current curriculum development and evaluation strategies, current instructional technology, and adult learning theory to provide consistency, assure clinical and documentation improvement subject matter competency of staff with respect to new technology or practice improvements, and support individual knowledge development.     2. Completes section and department reports and submits them as scheduled. (EF)
    3. Coordinates, maintains, and submits as indicated all program records in a timely fashion. (EF)
    4. Develops instructional materials to include course plans, objectives, and evaluation tools. (EF)

    FINANCE - 10%
    1. Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Recommends solutions in achieving departmental objectives. (EF)
    2. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks to meet the needs of clinical areas and department. (EF)

    GROWTH/INNOVATION - 20%
    1. Identifies unique and creative ways to assure accessibility and availability of education programs to staff on all campuses, identifying ways to provide learning experiences, evaluate learning, and assesses performance and competency, that are evidenced based, cost effective, and feasible for implementation in an appropriate setting.     2. Participates in research activities and conducts evidenced-based practice projects as indicated by the population served. (EF)

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
    o Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required; Master of Science in Nursing or other master--s degree in a related field preferred; OR
    o Medical School graduate where Western Medicine is practiced

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    o Three years of recent clinical documentation experience in an acute care hospital required
    o Academic hospital experience and coding experience preferred
    o Experience in education preferred

    CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
    o For RN - Texas RN license or temporary TX RN license, should obtain permanent license within 90 days. Compact license acceptable according to current Board of Nursing requirements. Certified Coding Specialists preferred
    o For Medical School graduate -Must have one of the following certifications:
    o Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) through the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists
    o Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) through the American Health Information Management Association
    o Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Association

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
    o Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
    o Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
    o Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
    o Knowledge of ICD-10-DX, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs
    o Ability to apply coding guidelines
    o Knowledge of current industry documentation challenges and mitigations
    o Knowledge of electronic health records and software applications in the field of CDI
    o Demonstrates ability to plan, organize, and follow through on assignments and/or projects
    o Exhibits leadership abilities including collaborative, consultative and coaching skills
    o Ability to utilize adult learning theory; knowledge of current educational technologies
    o Working knowledge of Microsoft products including PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook
