The Houston Zoo focuses on saving wildlife through reducing threats that face species in the wild. This includes action to reduce plastic pollution and paper use, promote sustainable seafood and sustainable palm oil, recycle electronics, and address pollinator decline. We also protect the counterparts of zoo animals, like lions, sharks, cranes and toads in the wild through partnerships with other global wildlife-saving organizations. Every member of our staff makes this possible by ensuring extraordinary animal care and guaranteeing the zoo's operations contribute to protecting animals in the wild. Our staff strengthens the zoo, making it possible to protect 20% of the lion population in Africa, save sea turtles through the elimination of plastic bottle sales, among other wildlife successes. By joining the Houston Zoo team, you save animals in the wild!Position SummaryThe Purchasing Supervisor is responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating policies and programs covering purchasing and warehousing of goods and services required by the zoo. Exercises independent judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate action. Assists the Purchasing Manager in carrying out requirements of daily operations.Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesOversees the purchasing and warehousing functions of the zoo.Selects, trains, and evaluates staff for the purchasing and warehousing function.Provides for purchasing processing ensuring that materials and services needed are properly approved and accounted for and arrive on time.Develops and implements purchasing programs to maximize effective use of organizational financial resources.Selects and negotiates with vendors for best prices and service.Manages the warehouse function to ensure most effective use of limited space and to optimize inventory on hand.Interfaces with staff of zoo to ensure supply and service needs are met.Develops programs designed to assist employees and managers in the best use of purchasing processes.Trains users in the Coupa Purchasing System; develops reports, coordinates with Accounting, reconciles and resolves issues.Performs work in the Warehouse or Commissary on an as-needed basis.Contributes to saving animals in the wild through: reduction of waste, water and energy use and inspiring guests and staff to take wildlife protecting actionsPerforms other duties as assignedEducation and ExperienceBachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or closely related fieldThorough understanding of current purchasing practicesExcellent oral and written communication skillsFour (4) years' experience in procurement and / or supply chain with progressive dutiesKnowledge of contract and pricing negotiationsProfessional Budgeting and financial administration experienceVendor Management with proven negotiation skills within a professional settingDisclaimerThe above job description is meant to describe the general nature and level of work being performed; it is not intended to be construed as a complete inventory of all responsibilities, duties and skills required for the position.This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position.
