The Senior Purchasing Agent serves as the lifeline to the world of suppliers and vendors. Translating the needs of our business in a way that enables, encourages and invites our supply base to partner with us in providing products and services of superior quality and value as well as ensuring that all policies and procedures are followed and that material issues are properly conveyed to internal customers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Oversees all estimate pricing activities associated with the effective pricing of project requirements to the estimating team in accordance with Project or end user schedules, specifications, and specific requirements.
  • Ensures that the procurement process is in adherence to company and client requirements, company policies, and procedures to ensure successful delivery of project requirements.
  • Interface with other departments and vendors for all matters related to the negotiating and pricing of project materials, equipment, and services scope.
  • Propose improvements to the current estimate pricing process that will improve vendor relationships and lower the cost of doing business.
  • Utilizes stock and best pricing models to provide opportunities for cost savings that may give the company an advantage on job estimates.
  • Supports negotiations with suppliers to ensure quality, service, and low overall costs and leverage organizations buying capacity. Maintain the highest level of quality, professionalism and integrity when negotiating with suppliers and dealing with clients and team mates.
  • Participates in the training of new and existing employees on best procurement practices and policies.
  • Participate in development, implementation and maintenance of standardized policies, processes, and procedures to ensure the timely and cost effective purchasing of materials and services to support operations.
  • Analyzes market conditions and trends which may impact pricing and availability of products/services and provides critical information to senior level management.
  • Supports necessary record keeping activities pertaining to invoices, contracts, purchase orders, requests for purchase, vendor audits, pricing agreements and purchases conducted through consultants, external bidding, etc. Mediates issues with vendors concerning the defects or shortage of purchased materials. Prepares required reports; provides detailed analysis of equipment and materials.
  • Participates in pre-job planning, kick off meeting, confirming LOI/contracts release buying, QA/QC checklist, Schedule, job specs and origin requirements on any jobs bought.
  • Oversees the purchases of raw materials for the fabrication of structural steel for all Schuff locations for any jobs this employee is managing.
  • Estimates prices and value of material according to past purchase history and knowledge of current market prices and fluctuating trends on all bids for all locations. Negotiates pricing with mills for estimates. Provide mill technical assistance to project teams. Ensures that all SOX regulations are followed.

    Work Experience

    Five (5) years of related experience as a Purchasing Agent or above level in steel fabrication or general building construction/manufacturing environment.


    Bachelors Degree in a Business or Logistics Related Field is highly preferred.

    Specialized Knowledge Certificates & Licenses

    Specialized Knowledge is also required in the following areas: Purchasing and Logistics; Procurement; Inventory Control.
    • Complete understanding of mill buying parameters
    • Understanding of technical requirements of jobs
    • Understanding of LEED requirements and buy to them
    • Understands SOX regulation and Ensures that all regulations are followed
    • Purchasing and Procurement Principles
    • Material/Unit Pricing

      Software & Technology

      Position will require the frequent use of MS Windows 7 and/or MS Windows 10, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Outlook. Blue Beam PDF Software, Financial Accounting software; Concur Software for expenses or applicable software; Kronos TKS or comparable TKS, Production Scheduling software such as Fabtrol or similar platform required; ERP system software MS Dynamics AX or similar ERP software preferred.

      Work Environment

      Position requires as many hours needed to fulfill the daily and weekly obligations required to carry out the functions. Working long days including evenings and weekends can be required for this position. Position may require out of state air/road travel as needed and required. A clean driving record may be required due to any necessary road travel. Current and valid drivers license and proof of acceptable insurance will be required. This position is generally indoors in a climate-controlled office.
